Vorwerk chickens are a rare pure breed, they are very friendly birds and incredibly docile. They are a large utility breed and lay up to 170 large cream coloured eggs a year. They are inquisitive and friendly, they are suitable with most bantams and other pure breeds.

Vorwerk chickens are a lovely gentle natured rare pure breed, they are fairly large and confident but docile at the same time. They are great pets as they are curious and inquisitive and like human company. They are not an overly cuddly bred but will hand tame easily and take treats form your palm, they will also follow you about talking to you a lot. They are good for children as they are strong and robust and not aggressive. They mix well with other breeds and can be placed on their own on mixed flocks.
The Vorwerk is a utility bird and as such they are fairly self sufficient, they love to forage and are very happy free roaming the fields, they would be suited to a smaller set up but would need a little run enrichment such as: logs to climb on, sand baths to languish in and areas of dirt to forage in. They are an alert, smart and great for first time chicken keepers. They are suited with most other breeds and can even be placed with some of our delicate bantams. They like company and are very inquisitive.
In the early 1900s a German poultry breeder by the name Oskar Vorwerk began to create a medium-sized, utilitarian chicken. Using the belted plumage pattern of the Lakenvelder with a dark brown rust coloured base the new breed was sometimes incorrectly called the Golden Lakenvelder which is a separate breed from the Vorwerk. By 1913, the Vorwerk was standardised, the breed is very rare in the UK and mainly found in Europe, there is also a bantam version of this very pretty breed.
